New woodworkers often feel overwhelmed by the variety of wood clamps available on the market and are frequently unsure of which clamps they require for woodworking. This article will demonstrate the many woodworking clamps I use in various scenarios. However, I want you to understand that you do not need to rush out and purchase a large number of clamps to handle all potential future clamping scenarios. I understand that a large rack of clamps can seem very impressive in your workshop, but I recommend purchasing woodworking clamps (and other tools) for each job. Plan what you want to make, then build it, and then determine which woodworking clamps you need to adequately clamp the furniture during the glue-up phase. On the subsequent project, repeat the process, and if you feel you need additional woodworking clamps, go ahead and purchase them. Frugality! I use the following types of wood clamps in my woodworking studio and classroom:

1. F-Style Clamps

F-style clamps are less expensive than parallel clamps due to their simpler construction. This sort of clamp concentrates all the pressure at the end of the jaws, where the clamp pad is pressed on the wood workpiece, rather than evenly along the jaws. F-style wood clamps may be your best option if you need to apply focused clamping pressure or if you're on a budget and can't afford enough parallel clamps for the job. They are available in various lengths and jaw reaches. Some F-style woodworking clamps use rubber pads, while others are made entirely of metal. I like rubber padding since it protects the wood surface from imprints, however, I've discovered that some brands of rubber padding leave an oily residue on the wood. Plan on using wood scraps to protect your furnishings.

2. C-Style clamps

Metal C-clamps are versatile clamps with a great deal of clamping force that I use for a variety of applications in my woodworking shop. My C-clamps range in size from 3 to 8 inches. Mainly, I use Cclamps to keep panels flat during glue-ups and to clamp table legs to a board in my vice so I can cut mortises on the workbench surface securely. Our woodworking school makes extensive use of C-clamps, particularly when constructing smaller tool items such as Try Squares, Bench Hooks, etc. When bending the frames of instruments, guitarists, violinists, and other luthiers employ a large number of Cclamps. C-clamps are very simple woodworking clamps, although they can come with helpful features such as a rapid-release button.

3. Ratcheting Clamps

In my workshop, ratcheting bar clamps lack the clamping force of other woodworking clamps but make up for it with ease. The ability to bind together two pieces of wood with only one hand is intriguing, and the quickrelease trigger provides added convenience. The soft rubber pads on the jaws of the clamp are ideal for clamping delicate work, as they protect the surface from indentations and marring. I use ratcheting clamps for glue-ups that do not require much pressure, and for holding wood to the workbench top, and certain ratcheting clamps can be inverted to act as spreaders, for applying outward pressure. Plus, a set of these clamps for woodworking is typically pretty reasonable. I'll elaborate on the brands below.

4. Spring Clamps

Spring clamps are relatively inexpensive for woodworkers; however, they deliver the least amount of clamping force. This renders spring clamps unsuitable for all but the most exceptional instances, such as glue-ups requiring extremely minimal pressure, holding fragile objects, edge banding, and holding tools or random objects in place temporarily. When constructing the delicate bodies of their instruments, guitar makers and other luthiers use several spring clamps.
