If you work in building projects, you most likely own a variety of levels. However, if you're new to the job, the number of possibilities available can be intimidating. There are various types of levels to aim at, including cross-line laser levels and rotary laser levels, to mention a few. However, the vast majority of what you'll encounter on a building site are spirit levels.It is not as easy as going to the store and selecting the best bubble level. You must understand which construction level is appropriate for you and the work you are undertaking.
I-BEAM LEVELS
The I-Beam is one of the most frequent forms of levels used in buildings. I-Beam levels have an I-shaped framework for added rigidity over a square metal frame. These are some of the lightest "conventional" Jobsite levels in the 24" to 96" range since they require less material than box levels.

DIGITAL LEVELS
Emerging in the market for box-level products are digital-level instruments. In addition to level, plumb, and sometimes 45° vials, you also receive a digital readout of the angle to confirm when you've reached the ideal slope or level. This type of construction level indicates visually which end must be adjusted to be level. Some additionally provide an auditory signal when you reach your destination. While some digital levels require calibration, some of the most recent models calibrate themselves. We strongly advise avoiding models that lack a vial entirely.
MASON'S LEVELS
Mason's levels are a subclass of box beam and I-beam levels for professionals in the masonry trade. These levels are more susceptible to abuse than their counterparts. Masons not only acquire concrete on their levels, which they must clean, but they also tend to tap them with considerable force to settle bricks and blocks during building. To resist damage, mason's levels often include a solid box frame rather than a hollow box or I-beam. In addition, they are typically lengthier, but certain speciality mason's levels with shorter lengths are entering the market to help screed and smooth. These combination screeds may be the newest forms of building levels.

TORPEDO LEVELS OR FRAME LEVELS
The longer your level, the more precise your build, is if you're using it correctly. But trades such as electrical and plumbing have less area than other trades, thus they frequently employ a torpedo level or frame level. In addition to plumb and square vials, these sorts of levels may also feature a 45° vial. Some vials will feature many lines for a range of gradients. Look for a torpedo level with a notched top, as you will frequently be working against a pipe or conduit. Still, other torpedo levels feature clamps that allow them to grip the pipe while bending it.
POCKET LEVELS
As you may have imagined, pocket levels range from 3 to 4 inches and can fit in your pocket. The notion that longer levels are more precise still holds, so these are not your go-to models if you require near-perfection. However, it is useful for a rapid check during construction or for narrower spaces than a torpedo level can reach. Some pocket levels are simple one-vial devices; however, other models can be rotated to verify the installation angle and are highly useful.
MAGNETIC LEVELS USED IN CONSTRUCTION
Numerous levels provide a magnetic alternative. These are useful when working with steel frames, but not everyone requires or desires them. Some tradespeople find their propensity to accumulate metal shavings aggravating since they can harm surfaces or collect enough to throw off the level.

BONUS FEATURES – LED LIGHTS
On some levels, LED lights can be used to make the vials more visible. They perform quite well. Remember that you are incorporating an electronic component into your level. Generally speaking, we find that the battery compartment is well-sealed. However, you must take precautions to prevent water from entering regardless. If there is no auto-off feature, you must also keep a spare set of batteries on hand and turn off the lights when you're finished.

This is not an exhaustive list of all types of construction levels. There are further specialized models, such as post levels and high-precision engineering levels, in addition to other laser types. However, they are the most frequent you will encounter. As stated previously, the longer the level's duration, the better. For ordinary construction, a 48-inch level is a good starting point, although plumbers and electricians will require a torpedo level. Every position is unique, so don't be shy about asking around.
