Whether you're a first-time DIYer or a seasoned pet owner looking for a weekend project, building a dog house can be a rewarding experience - for both you and your furry friend. With the right tools and a bit of planning, you can create a cozy, weather-resistant haven your dog will love, all within just two days.
Why Build a Dog House Yourself?
There's something special about giving your dog a home made with love. Unlike store-bought kennels, a DIY dog house allows you to:
Customize the size to fit your pet perfectly.
Choose durable materials suited for your climate.
Add personal touches - like their name, colors, or even a small porch!
Plus, it's a great opportunity to improve your woodworking skills using basic tools you probably already own.
What You'll Need
Materials:
Weather-resistant plywood (1/2" or thicker)
2x2 or 2x4 lumber for the frame
Exterior screws
Waterproof wood sealant or outdoor paint
Roofing material (shingles or corrugated plastic)
Tools (Recommended WORKPRO Tools):
WORKPRO Cordless Drill/Driver
WORKPRO 3PC Wood Chisel Set (for any fine detailing)
WORKPRO Tape Measure
WORKPRO Quick-Change Utility Knife
WORKPRO Claw Hammer
Circular saw or handsaw
Step-by-Step Building Instructions
Step 1: Measure & Plan
Start by measuring your dog while it's sitting and lying down. This helps ensure the house will be spacious enough. Add 25% to the height and length to determine interior dimensions.
Sketch a simple plan with:
A raised floor (to prevent moisture)
A slanted roof (for rain runoff)
A doorway large enough for entry, but not too large to retain warmth
Step 2: Cut & Build the Frame
Using your WORKPRO measuring tools and saw, cut the lumber for the base, walls, and roof frame. Assemble the base first, then the wall studs, using your drill and screws for stability.
Step 3: Add Walls and Roof
Attach your plywood panels to the frame. Leave the front wall open until you've cut the doorway using your utility knife and saw.
Next, secure your roof panels with screws, and cover with your chosen roofing material for water protection.
Step 4: Sand, Paint, and Seal
Use sandpaper or a sander to smooth out any rough edges, especially around the doorway. Apply outdoor paint or sealant to protect the house from the elements. Let it dry completely before use.
Bonus Tips
Add an overhang or flap to the doorway to block wind.
Paint it in fun colors to match your backyard theme.
Add a soft mat or old blanket inside for comfort.
